Stefanski Comfortable With Taking Blame

Feb 24, 2010 5:14 PM

The 76ers have had a disappointing season and general manager Ed Stefanski understands why fans are angry.

"I hear them," said Stefanski. "I speak with season ticketholders. I take e-mails from fans and get phone calls. I try to respond back to every one of them.

"I know what they are saying."

Philadelphia is just 22-34 after making the postseason in each of the last two seasons.

"That just comes with the territory," Stefanski said of taking the blame and "Fire Eddie" chants at the Wachovia Center recently. "Everybody is on the hot seat, but that's part of the job.

"If people say they have lost confidence in me, I can understand that, because we have not performed the way I expected us to."

Stefanski: 76ers Won't Release Iverson

Feb 23, 2010 5:33 PM

Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski is denying rumors that the team is thinking about releasing Allen Iverson.

Iverson has taken a second leave of absence from the team to be with his ill daughter. He missed 15 days earlier this month to tend 4-year-old Messiah.

"At this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Sixers, Allen and his family that he be allowed to deal with a very serious issue that is far greater than the game of basketball," Stefanski said in a statement.

Stefanski later denied a report saying that the team is considering breaking ties with Iverson.

"It's not true," Stefanski said.

76ers guard Allen Iverson has left the team to spend time with his ill daughter.

He is considered to be out indefinitely and will miss at least the final three games of Philadelphia's road trip.

Iverson has not disclosed what is ailing his 4-year-old daughter.

Philadelphia president Ed Stefanski said it's in the best interest of the team and Iverson to allow him time with his family to deal with a "very serious issue."

Sixers Looking For Basketball Trades, Not Financial Trades

Feb 17, 2010 1:07 PM

The Sixers will not be sellers at the trade deadline.

"The financial does not come into play," Ed Stefanski said Tuesday. "We're looking for value basketball-wise. We're not looking at trying to help us financially."

Many believe the Sixers should sell off their pieces and rebuild, but Stefanski is not of that mind.

"There are a lot of things you have to think about when you begin dismantling a team like that," Stefanski said. "And you're not always guaranteed that when you dismantle that team and draft at a certain spot, that the player you want is going to be there.

"And the year that you may have that cap space, [there's no guarantee] that the player is going to be there that's going to help that team. There's a lot of questions either way."

76ers Won't 'Blow Up' Their Roster

Feb 17, 2010 5:53 AM

Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski addressed trade rumors prior to the team's game against Miami on Tuesday night.

"If we send anybody out, we want to bring back value ...," Stefanski said. "We're very active, and a lot of teams are looking for us to do financial deals, to send back expiring contracts - we want to improve the product on the court."

The 76ers entered Tuesday's game with a 20-32 record, but Stefanski doesn't think it's wise to "blow up" the team.

"I have talked to season-ticket holders, I've talked to fans, I've talked to the press, who all have different theories and ideas of how it would be better to, in their term, 'Blow it up,' " Stefanski said. "When people say you blow it up, there are a lot of things you need to think about in just dismantling a team like that.

"You're not always guaranteed when you dismantle that team and you draft in a certain spot, that the player you want is going to be there, the franchise player is going to be there. Or the year you may have the cap space, that the player will be there."

Iverson Thought About Retiring

Feb 16, 2010 5:47 PM

Allen Iverson thought about not returning to the 76ers in the wake of the mysterious illness his daughter is dealing with.

Instead, Iverson returned to Philadelphia on Monday for the team's first practice since the All-Star break. He was away from the 76ers for 15 days to be with his 4-year-old daughter.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it," Iverson said about not returning. "Just the fact that her being so young and [the doctors] not knowing what it is, obviously you're going to think about that. It was tough for me, coming back.

"But I do have a commitment and an obligation to be with my team and to do my job."

Iverson Returns To 76ers, Should Play

Feb 16, 2010 5:54 AM

Allen Iverson has returned to the 76ers after missing five games to tend to his ill daughter.

The guard is expected to play against the Heat on Tuesday night.

He practiced on Monday for the first time since Feb. 2. Iverson said doctors still aren't sure what is wrong with his 4-year-old daughter.

"It was tough to leave her and my wife and kids," Iverson said.

"But I do have a commitment and an obligation to be with my team and to do my job. But it is rough. I think this is the only thing I do in life where for a couple hours during the game I don't think about nothing but [basketball]."
