76ers Want Larry Brown As Coach, Not President Or GM

Apr 28, 2020 11:27 AM

The 76ers will soon contact Larry Brown about their coaching vacancy, but they have little interest in giving him a front-office position, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Brown, 69, just finished his second season with the Bobcats and has said several times that Charlotte will be his last coaching stop.

Philadelphia is currently run by president and general manager Ed Stefanski, but his job has not been guaranteed.

Brown's family still lives in Philadelphia from his stint as the 76ers coach years ago.

Snider: 76ers Have Had No Contact With Brown

Apr 27, 2010 2:20 PM

76ers chairman Ed Snider says that the organization has had no contact with current Bobcats coach Larry Brown or any of his representatives.

Snider also denied reports that the team has made overtures to former Philadelphia guard, and current TNT announcer, Doug Collins.

Reports by both Yahoo! and the Philadelphia Inquirer have linked the 76ers to Brown.

"I don't know where this stuff comes from," Snider said Monday night. "I keep reading that [new Bobcats owner] Michael Jordan has said it'd be OK for Brown to leave [under certain circumstances]. But it's not coming from us. Nothing is coming from us."

Brown also denied the rumors following his team's elimination from the postseason on Monday night.

Hawks Willing To Sell Pick; Milt Newton Could Be 76er GM Under Brown

Apr 27, 2010 9:32 AM

The Hawks are pooling resources to offer a maximum-salary contract to Joe Johnson on July 1.  If they are able to do so, Johnson is likely to re-sign with Atlanta.

Sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski that the Hawks are willing to sell their first-round pick for $3 million, to help pay for Johnson's salary.

For the same reason, Atlanta will likely offer no more than a three-year contract between $1.8 million to $2 million per season to a possible successor to head coach Mike Woodson.

Woodson could leave to take the Sixers' job if Larry Brown becomes team president in Philadelphia.  Brown would also look to hire Wizards' executive Milt Newton as his GM, according to sources.

Brown Refutes Philadelphia Rumors

Apr 27, 2010 8:08 AM

Bobcats coach Larry Brown is refuting a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer that he'll soon leave the team for the 76ers.

The report claimed that Brown would leave Charlotte once the team was eliminated from the postseason. The Magic completed a four-game sweep of the Bobcats on Monday night.

Brown was first linked to the 76ers back in March and a Yahoo! report on Monday linked him to the franchise as well.

"I think I've answered that for the last two months," Brown said when asked to comment on the reports. "I'm not coaching anywhere but Charlotte."

He went on to say that he'll discuss his future with his family after the season.

"Now, am I going to talk to my family and talk to Michael? Absolutely," said Brown. "But I'm not coaching anywhere but for Michael if he'll have me."

Dalembert Wins Citizenship Award

Apr 19, 2010 1:15 PM

Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers is the 2009-10 recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award presented annually by the Professional Basketball Writers Association. The award is named for the second commissioner of the league and honors an NBA player or coach for outstanding service and dedication to the community.

Dalembert, an eight-year NBA veteran, has worked tirelessly to provide relief to victims of a devastating earthquake in his native Haiti since Jan. 12, 2010. In addition to making a personal donation of $100,000 to UNICEF, he visited the stricken country twice and raised awareness of the need for relief.

His Samuel Dalembert Foundation, founded in 2007, teams with UNICEF, the Red Cross and Feed the Children to assist relief efforts in Haiti. Dalembert has also been active in helping to build a training facility and a school in Haiti called the Dalembert Academy.

?What Samuel has done should be a model for all professional athletes. He saw a crying need for help and worked tirelessly to give whatever aid he could while spurring others to act and contribute as well,? said Doug Smith of the Toronto Star, president of the PBWA.

The PBWA represents approximately 150 writers for newspapers, magazines and Internet services who cover the NBA on a regular basis. Members nominate players and vote for the award. The finalists this season were Dalembert, Charlie Villanueva of the Detroit Pistons, Ronny Turiaf of the Golden State Warriors and Adonal Foyle of the Orlando Magic.

Players Confident In 76ers' Stefanski

Apr 19, 2010 7:27 AM

I think the most important thing for me to do is just let him do his job and just prepare myself as best as possible."

Stefanski has said that he'll consider all types of candidates to fill the team's coaching vacancy.

"I know he's going to work tirelessly to do it," Elton Brand said. "I know he really wants to right the ship for us, for ownership and for the city."

Jordan's No-Fine Policy Irked 76ers

Apr 18, 2010 10:46 AM

Eddie Jordan didn't issue fines during his season as the head coach of the 76ers, which upset his roster.

Philadelphia center Samuel Dalembert was routinely late to practice and was benched once in March against Toronto.

However, Dalembert was routinely late without incurring any type of fine.

A team source told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Jordan's decision to go without fines cost him credibility within the locker room, where players discussed instituting their own fines.
