Favors Believes 76ers Could Pick Him

Jun 23, 2010 7:27 AM

The 76ers are fully expected to take Ohio State's Evan Turner with the second overall pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft, but Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors still believes he's an option.

"I think I do," Favors said when asked if he thinks he has a realistic chance of being the second pick.

"Whatever team I get picked to, I'm just going to go in and work hard. Try to improve my game. Try to help the team improve and just move on."

The Nets have the third pick and president Rod Thorn expects the 76ers to draft Turner.

"All of the information I have points to that direction," Thorn told the Star-Ledger.

Hawes Wants To Become A Post Presence

Jun 23, 2010 7:16 AM

Spencer Hawes, who the 76ers acquired in a trade with the Kings last week, is focused on playing in the post more next season.

"I have been focusing on this summer, kind of getting stronger, trying to get back down to the post," said the center.

Hawes admitted that coming into the NBA as the tenth overall pick in 2007 he didn't possess the strength needed to bang in the post as he had in college.

"Coming in as a 19- and 20-year-old, I didn't necessarily have the strength to be able to hold my own as much down there," said Hawes.

"Now having grown up a little bit, I think that's something I'm getting to be more effective at. I would like to try to reestablish that as a strong suit."

Executive Says 76ers Have To Trade Iguodala If They Draft Turner

Jun 21, 2010 5:09 PM

The 76ers are expected to use the second overall pick on Ohio State's Evan Turner, an addition that might force them to move Andre Iguodala.

"If you take Turner, you have to do something with Iguodala," a Western Conference general manager told Philly Mag. "Turner doesn't have the athletic ability of Iguodala, but Iguodala doesn't have the feel for the game Turner does."

Another Western Conference executive used the word "redundancy" to describe the Turner-Iguodala pairing, since both players need the ball in their hands to be effective.

"There's not enough floor space for the two of them," he says.

The selection of Turner "might lead them to do commit to trading Iguodala," the executive added.

Iguodala has four years and $56.5 million left on his contract.

76ers Still Looking To Make Deals

Jun 19, 2010 8:25 PM

76ers general manager Ed Stefanski traded center Samuel Damelbert on Thursday, but he's not necessarily done dealing.

"After you come off of a 27-win season, you got to be aggressive," Stefanski said. "We are going to keep looking to see if we can tweak this even more. Yeah, we have to be more active."

He wouldn't name players he is willing to part with or positions he wants to upgrade through a trade.

"I don't know what positions or big needs [need attention], but we will just see the players that we have and what we can get back for them if it makes us better," Stefanski said. "We are not going to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. [Friday], we made a trade that made basketball sense to us."

76ers Say Trade Won't Affect Draft Plans

Jun 19, 2010 10:11 AM

The 76ers traded Samuel Dalembert to the Kings on Thursday for Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes.

Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski insists that the team's draft plans won't be affected by the trade.

On Friday, the team had Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors and Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins in for workouts. The two had been scheduled to come in for weeks.

"I think we're where we were before -- the same draft options we had," Stefanski said. "We're very fortunate to be drafting No. 2. I don't think [the trade] changes it a lot."

Many believe the 76ers will use the No. 2 pick on Ohio State guard Evan Turner.

Sixers Expect Brand To Benefit From Dalembert Trade

Jun 19, 2010 2:01 AM

Doug Collins expects the Sixers to be better offensively at center due to the departure of Samuel Dalembert.

"I feel like every one of our big guys is skilled offensively," said Collins after Friday's pre-draft workout. "They can all shoot. I think that's a great thing to be able to do. Now you've got four interchangeable big guys (Hawes, Marreese Speights, Jason Smith and power forward Elton Brand)."

Collins expects Brand to benefit from the Dalembert trade.

"It changes the dynamics a little bit for Elton Brand, because I was thinking I might have to play him strictly at the '5,' because I didn't think he and Sam played well together," Collins said. "Now, I feel Elton can play with Hawes and he can play with Speights. I think it gives us a chance to play a bigger lineup that I'm more comfortable with."
