Donovan Mitchell Says Mike Conley Makes 'My Job Easier' After Game 3 Win

May 30, 2021 12:43 PM

Mike Conley scored 27 points as the Utah Jazz beat the Memphis Grizzlies 121-111 in Game 3.

The Jazz now lead the series 2-1.

"Mike was terrific, man," said Donovan Mitchell after the game. "On both ends of the floor. He was Mike Conley. And he always has been for us all year, and he's taken it to an even nother level. And I feel like when you have a guy like that who can handle the ball, who can control the game, as well, it makes my life and my job easier."

The Jazz closed the game on a 14-2 run over the last 4:15 of regulation.

Conley also tied a career-high with seven 3s in the game.

Quin Snyder credited Conley's defense on Ja Morant for turning the game around.

"Obviously, Ja is such a terrific player. I thought really as much as anything, Mike Conley, he was unbelievable. Just his quickness, his presence on the ball," said Snyder.

Conley added that it felt "surreal" playing against Morant and the Grizzlies in Memphis.

"Just seeing a guy that's so talented, he's a young superstar in the league, wearing the jersey that I'm so used to wearing. Getting the cheers from the crowd that I'm so used to hearing. It's surreal. It's like full circle. You never thought that it would be this way."

Jazz Ban Three Fans Who Made Racist, Lewd Remarks To Ja Morant's Father

May 27, 2021 11:09 PM

Ja Morant's father, Tee Morant, was subjected to vulgar and racist comments during Game 2 of the first round playoff series between the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz.

"I know heckling," Tee Morant said in a phone interview with ESPN on Thursday night. "We were doing that the whole game. But that's different than heckling. That's straight up disrespectful. That was too far out of line. You don't say nothing like that heckling. That's beyond heckling."

Ja Morant, in a tweet posted later Thursday, agreed with Utah's decision to ban the fans, writing, "my family should be able [to] cheer for me & my teammates without getting inappropriate s--- said to them."

Morant went on to write that his family told him they "felt the love from all the other jazz fans who were around them" and that it was just the three fans who "went too far."

Tee Morant said one fan made a sexually explicit remark to his wife, Jamie.

According to Tee Morant, another Jazz fan told him, "I'll put a nickel in your back and watch you dance, boy."

Several other Jazz fans confronted that fan and alerted security.

"The Utah Jazz have zero tolerance for offensive or disruptive behavior," the Jazz said in a statement Thursday. "An incident occurred last night involving a verbal altercation during Game 2. Arena security staff intervened, and the investigation resulted in the removal and banning of three Jazz fans indefinitely.

"We apologize to all who were impacted by this unfortunate incident and condemn unacceptable fan behavior."

Donovan Mitchell's Relationship With Jazz 'Damaged This Week'

May 25, 2021 10:03 AM

Donovan Mitchell was a late scratch for Game 1 for the Utah Jazz against the Memphis Grizzlies, which came as a surprise to him and left him "definitely frustrated and upset" with the franchise.

"I will tell you this: Donovan's relationship with the organization was damaged this week," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast on Tuesday. "Is it damaged to the point where it can't be repaired? I'm not saying that. Is it something that they'll get past and he'll just move on and it will just be a blip on the radar screen? Maybe. Maybe they're in The Finals in two months and who cares? Maybe they win the next four games and it's totally forgotten. But right now, Donovan is hurting. He's really hurting the way this happened.

"Something else that's important, he was out five weeks give or take. April 16th I think the injury was and now we're at the end of May. Five or six weeks. Early on in the recovery process, he was not recovering well. And so he stopped working exclusively with the team and he hired and brought, and he already had his own trainer, and he brought in his own trainer to begin rehabbing with that trainer."

Mitchell signed a five-year max extension worth up to $195 million deal with the Jazz last offseason.

"Regardless of what it means in this moment in times, what it means going forward for Donovan Mitchell and the Jazz is something to keep an eye on," added Windhorst. "I know he has just signed this huge contract extension and it hasn't kicked in yet. I'm not saying anything there. I'm just saying damage was done. Damage was done here."

Donovan Mitchell 'Incensed' Jazz Didn't Let Him Play Game 1

May 24, 2021 11:43 AM

Donovan Mitchell was "incensed" at the decision by the Utah Jazz to hold him out of Game 1, which the team lost 112-109 to the Memphis Grizzlies.

After he progressed slowly in the early stages of recovery, Mitchell began to work with his personal training staff on the rehabilitation.

Some easing of frustrations with Mitchell may have to take place, which could even include Dwyane Wade getting involved. Wade recently became a part-owner.

Mitchell was expected to play throughout the weekend. Mitchell was not listed on the Jazz's injury report Saturday or early Sunday.

"I'm ready to go," Mitchell said Sunday morning. "No pain. I'm excited to get going."

"I try to stay out of all of this, because it's just going to give me a headache," Rudy Gobert said. "Hopefully, he's good for next game. That's all I'm worried about."
