Danny Ainge Meets With Jazz, Could Join Team In Advisory Role

Jun 28, 2021 8:26 PM

Danny Ainge met with the Utah Jazz last week and is a candidate to join their front office. Ainge is being considered for an advisory role just a few weeks after he left the Boston Celtics.

Justin Zanik will remain as Utah's primary decision-maker either way.

Dennis Lindsey exited as Utah's executive vice president of basketball operations on Sunday in a decision made by Ryan Smith.

Smith is known to have a close relationship with Ainge.

Jazz Ownership Made Decision To Replace Dennis Lindsey With Justin Zanik

Jun 28, 2021 8:22 PM

The exit of Dennis Lindsey as president of basketball operations was a decision made more by ownership than by Lindsey.

Ryan Smith, who took over ownership in December, chose to move on without Lindsey and instead promoted Justin Zanik to the role of Utah's primary decision-maker.

There had been a long-running disconnect between Lindsey and Quin Snyder. While Lindsey hired Snyder, the relationship deteriorated over the years. While partnerships between coaching staffs and front offices are commonly fraught, this one was considered unusually chilly.

“Quin won,” one source simply said.

Zanik has a better relationship both with Smith and Snyder than Lindsey did.

Donovan Mitchell Says Playoff Loss 'Is Going To Eat At Me'

Jun 20, 2021 2:03 AM

Donovan Mitchell reflected on the end of the Utah Jazz season, saying that the loss to the Los Angeles Clippers was more painful than last season's defeat to the Denver Nuggets.

"This hurts more than last year because we were up again and lost again," said Mitchell. "This is going to eat at me. Even when I go to the grocery store, I'm going to be thinking about it."

Mitchell averaged 32.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds in the playoffs, despite missing the final 16 games of the regular season due to an ankle sprain.

Mitchell finished with 39 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists in the elimination game, while also making nine 3-pointers. He is the only player in NBA history to post that stat line in the playoffs.

"He's a warrior," added Quin Snyder. "It's a unique player that has the competitiveness and the desire to play through that type of pain."

Donovan Mitchell On Ankle: I Got To Find A Way

Jun 17, 2021 8:15 AM

Donovan Mitchell's right ankle has worsened throughout the Western Conference Semifinals as the Utah Jazz now find themselves on the brink of elimination. Mitchell finished with a postseason-low 21 points on 6-of-19 shooting in Game 5.

"It's something I'm going to have to deal with," Mitchell said. "I mean, it f---ing sucks. I ain't got nothing else to say. Like, it's tough when you're trying different things that you normally do and you see spots you can get to, but you can't, so you got to find a way to make it happen.

"It's tough, but I got to find a way. Otherwise, I'm going to be home. And I said it last year ... and I said during the year, we didn't do all this to lose in the second round, so we got to figure it the f--- out. Otherwise, that's it. Excuse my language."

Mitchell missed the final 16 games of the regular season and the Jazz also held him out of Game 1 of the first round, which created controversy with his disagreement with the decision.

Mitchell has aggravated the injury on multiple occasions during the second round.

"For most of my life, I've been able to push by, explode by, and jump through people or over people, and for the first time in my career, I've had to play on the floor," Mitchell said. "Knowing when to attack, picking my spots, finding my teammates, I think that's the biggest thing, being able to kind of get off, hit them when they're doubling me and engaging the blitz. And I think I did a solid job of that. I can do better. It's a learning process and it sucks that I'm learning this through the playoffs, but it is what it is and no excuses."

The Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers are tied 2-2 entering Game 5.

Conley had been preparing to play in Game 3, but suffered a setback before Game 2.
