Jazz, Blazers Interested In Trading For OG Anunoby

May 31, 2022 9:43 AM

The Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers are looking to retool their rosters this offseason. That has both teams reportedly looking at trading for OG Anunoby of the Toronto Raptors.

Anunoby hasn't directly expressed dissatisfaction with his role in Toronto, but executives around the league have heard he would be open to trade. Anunoby is reportedly unhappy with his role in the Raptors offense that heavily featured Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet and rookie Scottie Barnes.

Utah and Toronto have been previously linked via trade rumors around Rudy Gobert. Those discussions have never yielded anything, and it's unclear if that's a direction the Raptors would want to go.

Portland is set up to be very flexible this summer. The Blazers could create over $30 million in cap space, or they can operate as an over-the-cap team and use their $20.8 million trade exception. Either way, they'd be well-positioned to add Anunoby, as they rebuild their roster around Damian Lillard.

Danny Ainge Praises Personnel Moves Made By Brad Stevens

May 31, 2022 8:04 AM

With the Boston Celtics finally reaching The Finals during their first season since exiting the franchise, Danny Ainge was interviewed by Heavy.com.

“I think that, by moving Kemba,” Ainge told Heavy, “it allowed Marcus (Smart), Jaylen (Brown) and Jayson (Tatum) and Robert Williams to really thrive in positional size, with Horford taking up a big responsibility in the front line for Robert and moving Jaylen, Jayson and Marcus to their positions where they can have size advantages.

“It’s just a better fit. I think that is really clear.”

Ainge praised the size of Boston's defense compared to how they tried to cover for smaller players in the past.

“I think it makes your defense so much better,” said Ainge. “You don’t really have any weak holes in your defense at all. There’s a lot of small players that we had, with Kemba and Isaiah Thomas, and Kyrie (Irving) had pretty good size for a point guard, but he was smaller. Sometimes there’s some defensive liability with those great small players.

“You don’t have the same dynamic offensive point guard in Marcus, but he brings such a different element with his ability to pass and his ability to post up and rebound. But more than anything, the versatility that he has to be able to guard 1 through 5, I mean, that’s really increased the defensive ability of their team.”

Ainge maintains contact with the Boston front office by way of Brad Stevens, as well as Ainge's son Austin Ainge.

“I’m really impressed by what Brad has done in his first year. I think he’s done an excellent job,” Ainge said. “Going into the season, I didn’t think he was certain of what he had for depth on the bench, and getting Josh Richardson and even (Dennis) Schroder were good acquisitions. You know, getting Al so you could play a bigger brand of basketball while adding a solid veteran player around their core four players was something that’s had a big impact on this season.

“I know that Al wanted to come back to Boston, so that was good, too. And then to make the changes during the season, to see that there were opportunities to improve, was also important. It wasn’t like Schroder wasn’t playing well; Schroder was playing well, but it probably wasn’t a great fit to finish games with Marcus and Schroder. And, you know, Schroder came with the idea that he was going to play a really big role. So I think that Brad recognized the challenge that the coach may have had, and the move freed up playing time for other guys — and (Payton) Pritchard has played really well since the trade of Schroder, so that was good, too.”

Mavericks Unlikely To Go For 'All-Out Pursuit' Of Rudy Gobert

May 27, 2022 5:47 PM

The Dallas Mavericks are unlikely to embark on "an all-out pursuit" of Rudy Gobert.

The Mavericks have spoken openly about their need to improve their rim protection and rounding, but their often reported interest in Gobert is somewhat overstated.

Dallas sees Zach LaVine as the sort of player who would fill perhaps a more crucial need due to his ability to play off the ball as a spot-up shooter, but also penetrate off the dribble and cut to the basket.

The Mavericks would need LaVine and the Chicago Bulls to participate in a sign-and-trade, further complicated by their dearth of tradable assets.

Jazz Have No Desire To Enter Rebuild This Offseason

May 11, 2022 11:24 AM

The Utah Jazz will host the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, which multiple league sources have described as a "critical element of the franchise's future plans."

Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report adds that it is of "great importance to Jazz governor Ryan Smith that Utah has multiple players in that midseason classic."

The leadership of the Jazz have no "no designs of entering any sort of rebuild" this offseason despite their first round elimination.

Instead of pursuing a trade of either Donovan Mitchell or Rudy Gobert, the Jazz could explore the market for Bojan Bogdanovic, Royce O'Neale and Mike Conley.

Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell Trade Rumors Not Coming From Jazz Side

May 11, 2022 10:02 AM

There's a lot of chatter that the Utah Jazz could trade Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell this summer. However, the Jazz say none of those whispers are coming from Utah.

Reports are the Jazz believe the rumors around Mitchell wanting a trade are being driven by Mitchell's agency CAA. This is believed to be especially true with reports linking Mitchell to the New York Knicks. The Knicks front office is run by former CAA employees Leon Rose and William Wesley.

Similarly, despite rumored interest from the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors, Utah doesn't plan to trade Gobert. The Jazz don't believe a Gobert deal would fix the issues the team has.

Raptors Would Have 'Degree Of Interest' In Potential Rudy Gobert Trade

May 8, 2022 4:04 PM

The Toronto Raptors would express a "degree of interest" should Rudy Gobert be made available in a trade, sources told Ian Begley of SNY.

Marc Stein also reported earlier this week of the Raptors' interest in a potential Gobert trade. The Mavs are also rumored to be interested should a deal arise.

In addition, the Warriors have been linked as a possible destination for Gobert.

Gobert is seen as a more realistic trade target than Donovan Mitchell should the Jazz decide to deal one of the two stars.

Lakers Moving Slow On Head Coach To See If Doc Rivers, Quin Snyder Become Available

May 7, 2022 4:43 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are moving their head coaching search at a deliberate pace, which sources tell Marc Stein is at least in part a result of their wish to see if Doc Rivers or Quin Snyder become available.

Rivers previously was head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and his status as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers has come into question by multiple media members in recent months.

Snyder also has an uncertain future with his incumbent team as he has rebuffed extension overtures from the Utah Jazz.

The Lakers have interviewed Terry Stotts, Darvin Ham, Adrian Griffin and Mark Jackson.

Hornets Would Be Interested In Quin Snyder

May 2, 2022 3:44 PM

The Charlotte Hornets would have interest in hiring Quin Snyder as head coach should he not return to the Utah Jazz.

Snyder was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers during the tenure of Mitch Kupchak.

Snyder is expected to meet with reporters in the coming days for his end-of-season news conference.

While Snyder's future with the Jazz has been in doubt, Justin Zanik said on Friday there's "no other partner" he would rather have as head coach.

The Hornets have had a very quiet coaching process since firing James Borrego.

Warriors Could Look Into Trade For Rudy Gobert

May 1, 2022 1:24 PM

On the latest Hoop Collective, the group talked about where the Utah Jazz go after their first-round loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Much of that speculation was around Rudy Gobert's future.

Brian Windhorst speculated that the Golden State Warriors could be a team interested in acquiring Gobert. Tim MacMahon sarcastically noted that Draymond Green and Gobert have a great relationship, while Windhorst added that the Warriors have Andrew Wiggins, and his large contract, to offer in a trade.

Both Windhorst and MacMahon said they believe it's more likely Gobert would be moved this summer than Donovan Mitchell.  The sense is that Utah would prefer to rebuild around Mitchell.
