Tyrese Maxey 'Close To Untouchable'; Sixers Will Listen On Matisse Thybulle

May 24, 2022 9:13 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers approach the offseason knowing they have some work to do with their roster. James Harden and his contract are tops on that list, but other Sixers have questions about their futures in Philadelphia as well.

Tyrese Maxey is coming off a breakout sophomore season. That has Maxey a popular target in trade rumors, but it's unlikely Daryl Morey has interest in moving his burgeoning point guard.

"Maxey is as close to untouchable as you could be," a source told PhillyVoice over the weekend.

One of the 76ers other young players isn't in the same boat. Matisse Thybulle has been prominently mentioned in rumors and he doesn't hold the same untouchable status as Maxey does.

The Sixers aren't exactly shopping their young, defensive-minded wing, but they're open to listening to offers for him. The Chicago Bulls are one of the teams rumored to be interested in trading for Thybulle.

76ers To Meet With Doc Rivers In Coming Days As Lakers Continue To 'Loom'

May 14, 2022 8:41 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers plan to meet with Doc Rivers in the coming days to discuss their future plans. Rivers will meet with Daryl Morey, Elton Brand and perhaps ownership.

The 76ers confirmed their position on retaining Rivers when Morey said he will be back as head coach, but there could be a question of whether the situation makes sense for Rivers.

"Here's what you need to watch for in the next few days in Philadelphia," said Adrian Wojnarowski.

"When they start to sit down on what it's going to look like moving forward, what are the changes they have to make? Whether it's personnel, style of play. Are they all on the same page? Do they all see the future [similarly]? Are they aligned in that way?

"I think that's going to be really important for Doc Rivers in Philadelphia. He's got three years left on his deal in Philadelphia. Around $8 million per season. Certainly a lot left on his contract.

"The Lakers loom out there. They have slow played their coaching search. They have waited to see is there's an established veteran, championship perhaps even, coach in the marketplace. It's not Nick Nurse. It's not Quin Snyder. So I think they'll continue to wait to see what happens in Philadelphia with Doc Rivers.

"I think in a perfect world Doc Rivers stays in Philadelphia. He wants to win a championship. That's a team that is still closer to that than perhaps what the Lakers' roster would suggest right now.

"But I think the conversations in Philly now with Doc and the team are going to be important. I don't think there was ever really any question on whether Philly wanted him back. The idea he would get fired was farfetched. Let's see what happens when they sit and talk about the future."

Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports reports Saturday afternoon that the 76ers do not plan to meet with Rivers to discuss his future as they are committed to him remaining as head coach.

76ers Plan To Re-Sign James Harden, Will Work With His Reps On Contract

May 13, 2022 3:45 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers plan on re-signing James Harden this offseason. The 76ers, however, may not simply offer Harden the full max. Harden has a $47.4 million player option with the 76ers though he can decline it and re-sign on a five-year, $270 million deal. Harden could also take less money, which could theoretically allow the 76ers to improve the roster around him.

"The plan is to have him back," said Daryl Morey. "That's been the plan since the trade. Obviously, we have to work with his representation, and that'll be between us to figure out how that works."

After forcing his way off the Brooklyn Nets in February with the 76ers giving up Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and multiple future first round picks, it is difficult to conceive of a scenario in which a rival team values Harden as much as they do. Harden struggled as a scorer during the playoffs, leading some to question whether he is worth a near max contract at his age.

Daryl Morey: Sixers Will Retain Doc Rivers As Head Coach

May 13, 2022 2:32 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers will retain Doc Rivers as head coach next season, according to Daryl Morey.

"I just think he's a great coach and I love working with him," said Morey.

The Sixers were eliminated from the playoffs in Game 6, leading to speculation that they could make a change with Rivers. The Sixers hired Rivers in October 2020 before they later hired Morey to run the front office.

Rivers has also been linked with the vacancy with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We're sick we're here," said Morey. "We have big aspirations for the team, I know the fans do, too ... that's why we're here. That's why we do this. It's tough to be here right now."

Doc Rivers: I Think I Do A Terrific Job, No One Picked Us To Be Anywhere

May 13, 2022 1:49 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers were eliminated in Game 6 by the Miami Heat in disappointing fashion as the team played listlessly throughout the second half.

“I came to the conclusion at the end of this game that we were not good enough to beat Miami," Rivers said.

The future of Rivers with the 76ers has become a topic of conversation. Rivers is signed through 24-25, but he's also been linked with the Los Angeles Lakers' head coaching vacancy.

“I don’t worry about my job. I think I do a terrific job. If you don’t, then you should write it," Rivers said. “Because I worked my butt off to get this team here. When I first got here, no one picked us to be anywhere. Again this year, the same thing. If that's how anyone feels, write it. I'm going to feel secure about it.”

Joel Embiid Critiques James Harden, Wishes Sixers Kept Jimmy Butler

May 13, 2022 1:05 PM

Joel Embiid spoke candidly about the state of the Philadelphia 76ers following their Game 6 elimination by the Miami Heat. For the second straight season and third time in four seasons, the Sixers were eliminated in the second round.

"Since we got him, everybody expected the Houston James Harden," Embiid said. "But that's not who he is anymore. He's more of a playmaker. I thought, at times, he could have been, as all of us could have been, more aggressive. All of us whether it was Tyrese [Maxey] or Tobias [Harris] or guys coming off the bench.

"And I'm not just talking about offensively. I'm talking about, you know, as a whole offensively and defensively. I didn't think we were good defensively as a team. They took advantage of a lot of stuff that we tried to do defensively. And then offensively just really everybody being on the same page, obviously, only having probably what, three or four months to all work together and try to figure it out. Maybe it wasn't a lot of time. ... I don't think we played our best basketball."

Embiid also praised Jimmy Butler.

"Obviously, that's my guy," Embiid said. "That's my brother. Oh, man, it's tough. But I'm so proud of him. He's playing an unreal level right now. He's something else right now. I'm proud of him being at this level and carrying them and what he's been able to do. They've had ups and downs the whole season. Missing guys, not being healthy, and, they still found a way to be the No. 1 team in the East, and to be able to come in and do what they did, they deserve a lot of credit. They have a great team, great guys overall. And obviously great coaching and a great front offense. So a lot of credit to them.

"Like I said, I'm happy for him. I mean, I won't sit here and say I didn't wish he was my teammate. I still don't know how we let him go. I wish I could have gone to battle with him still. But it is what it is. I just gotta keep building and keep trying to reach that goal."

James Harden Says He'll Do 'Whatever It Takes To Help This Team' Following Sixers Elimination

May 13, 2022 1:39 AM

James Harden said he's willing to do "whatever it takes to help this team continue to grow" after the Philadelphia 76ers were eliminated from the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Miami Heat in 6 games.

Harden added "I'll be here" when asked if he would opt into his player option for next season.

It was reported earlier this month that Harden may not demand a max contract when he hits free agency.

Harden would be eligible to sign a five-year, $270 million deal should he decline his player option.

Harden scored 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting in Game 6.
