Kerr Wants Warriors To Be Preemptive In Avoiding Playoff Pain

Dec 28, 2014 11:31 AM

The Golden State Warriors ended their losing streak, but were a little out of sync in their win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

One of the Warriors' main issues has been turnovers.

"I think our team has poor habits that we're trying to solve, that we're trying to get better with," Steve Kerr said. "The history of the league is good teams kind of have to go through playoff pain before they really get it, before they take that next step. I want to be pre-emptive.

"I want our guys to understand that we're good enough now to play with anybody. Our record shows that. Let's get rid of those bad habits now and not have to sit here in May and wonder, 'Gosh, if I hadn't just made seven careless plays. ...' "

Draymond Green: Warriors 'Too Nice' In Loss To Clippers

Dec 26, 2014 11:40 AM

Draymond Green believes the Golden State Warriors "were too nice" in their 100-86 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Warriors and Clippers have had a feisty rivalry over the past few seasons.

"I don't know what the cause of it was, maybe everybody was a little too jolly, Christmas spirit," said Green, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes. "But it was too nice. It was boring."

The Warriors scored just 86 points on 80 shots.

"I mean, it's no secret we don't like them, and it's no secret they don't like us," Green said by his locker. "So I don't know why the game was that nice, trying to act like we like each other and we don't. Boring game."

When asked if there was anyone on Los Angeles whom he did not respect Green said, "Absolutely. Of course there is."

Dec 25, 2014 1:39 PM

LeBron James is the overall leading vote getter for the 2015 NBA All-Star Game through the first round of voting, with 552,967 overall votes.

Stephen Curry is second leader among voting in the Western Conference and second overall with 549,095 votes.

James, who finished as last season’s leading vote-getter while a member of the Miami Heat, is followed in the Eastern Conference by Washington’s John Wall with 299,209 overall votes. In the Western Conference, close behind Curry is Anthony Davis, with 524,623 votes. If the voting holds, Curry, Wall and Davis would all be making just their second All-Star appearances.

Kobe Bryant (521,542 votes) and Dwyane Wade (265,917 votes) are the third leading vote getters in each conference.

Just several hundred votes behind Wade in the East is New York’s Carmelo Anthony, while Chicago’s Pau Gasol currently rounds out the East’s starting five. Out West, Blake Griffin and Marc Gasol are are currently leading in the race to win the remaining starting spots.

Klay Thompson Trying To Leave 'Bashful' Demeanor In Past

Dec 23, 2014 11:40 AM

Klay Thompson has been a key part of the Golden State Warriors' excellent start and the early returns indicate the front office may have made the right decision in not trading him for Kevin Love.

"I won't be politically correct. Shoot, I knew," said Thompson when asked if he felt like he's validated that decision. "If I got traded I was like, "Oh, well. I'ma prove 'em wrong." That's my attitude. I knew how good we could be, man. Why would you want to mess up the best backcourt in the league. We got great chemistry. I mean, we didn't have Andrew Bogut last year and we took a great Clippers team to seven games. So I was like, we're right there, we just need a little more. And the additions we had? I was like, "No, we better not mess this up." So, I don't think I validated it yet. I think it's still early, we're only 25 games in. I'm excited, we had a great start. I knew my worth. I knew I could be one of the best two guards in the league. I'm not going to be bashful about it anymore."

Thompson has been bolder in his statements to the media this season.

"Yeah, my dad told me, "Klay you gotta be bold, man," said Thompson. "Shoot, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird knew how good they were. And if they weren't they'd tell it to you." So he's like, "you gotta be bold and you gotta believe that you're the best,' and I'm like, dad's right. "Everything I told you, Klay, is coming to truth." He told me in high school I had a $100 million jump shot, I was like "Ha! Don't joke!""

Wolves Would Have Kept Kevin Love Without Cavs' Trade

Dec 22, 2014 5:27 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves began their trade talks involving Kevin Love with the Golden State Warriors before eventually agreeing upon a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Warriors were unwilling to include Klay Thompson in any deal for Love, which made a trade impossible for both sides.

The Wolves acquired Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and Thaddeus Young for Love, Alexey Shved and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Flip Saunders says the Wolves would have kept Love if the deal with the Cavaliers didn't come together. There were no other trades on the table at that point which were to the Wolves' liking.

David Lee To Return To Warriors' Lineup Monday

Dec 21, 2014 11:23 AM

David Lee will return to the Golden State Warriors' lineup on Monday against the Sacramento Kings.

Lee has missed all but six minutes of the season since re-injuring his left hamstring.

"He looked good, he was moving really well, his hamstring's fine," said Steve Kerr. "He told me everything else is sore now, which is a good sign. He's getting back into basketball shape and running a lot of sprints. But this was the first time he's scrimmaged full court, which was a good step."

Lee's return will allow the Warriors to reduce Draymond Green's minutes, who has been playing more than 40 per game since Andrew Bogut went out with injury.

Stephen Curry Wanted Knicks To Draft Him In 2009

Dec 14, 2014 4:26 PM

Stephen Curry wanted to play for the New York Knicks when he came out of Davidson and in the NBA Draft in 2009. Curry was chosen by the Golden State Warriors at No. 7 while Jordan Hill was taken by the Knicks one spot later.

“The Warriors had some questionable characters on their team, the Knicks really needed a point guard, and we felt that Stephen would fit perfectly with a coach like Mike D’Antoni, playing that fast, up-and-down style," Dell Curry said. "He loved the idea of playing at Madison Square Garden.”

Donnie Walsh and Larry Riley, both running the Knicks and Warriors, respectively, at the time, fell in love with Curry's game.

“He’d get the ball in the backcourt, and boom, he was gone,” Walsh said. “It wasn’t just his quickness; he saw everything. I’m sitting there thinking, ‘We’ve got D’Antoni coaching our team, and this kid would fit perfectly.’"

“And you know what?” Riley said. “I walked out that night thinking that he would be a very good N.B.A. player for 10 years. I didn’t worry about what he shot. I knew he could shoot. The reason I really liked him was that he never backed down. Nelly always loved playing small ball. And there was always the thought that if it didn’t work, we could move someone.”

Curry's agent, Jeff Austin, admitted he tried to do whatever he could to get Curry in New York.

“Riley calls me and says, ‘Can I watch a workout?’ ” Austin said. “I said, ‘No, you can’t.’ He says, ‘Can I talk to him?’ I said, ‘No, you can’t.’ I tell him that Stephen wants to be in New York. Stay away from him.

“Larry, to his credit, kept saying, ‘I’m still taking him.’ There was nothing I could do to dissuade him.

“The Knicks, if they were one spot higher, where would they be now? It just shows you that as much time and energy they put into it, the draft is not an exact science. A lot of it is just luck, where you land.”
