Donnie Walsh Retiring From Pacers

Dec 30, 2020 5:01 PM

Donnie Walsh is retiring from his role with the Indiana Pacers.

In Walsh’s 22 years as general manager or president, the Pacers reached the playoffs 19 times.

“I’m getting older and don’t have the energy,” said Walsh, 79. “It’s a young man’s sport. This job has always occupied a great deal of my time. The Pacers were always in my head. This gives me an opportunity to pay attention to my children, my grandchildren and my wife (Judy) of 58 years.”

“Over my thirty-year relationship with Donnie, I have been amazed to watch him help lead this organization to what it has become," Pacers owner Herb Simon said in a statement. "He was certainly the right leader at the right time, and the invaluable wisdom and counsel he has provided over the decades extend well beyond the lines of the basketball court. For that, I owe him an incredible debt of gratitude. While he may be stepping away, Donnie will always be part of the Pacers family and I am personally excited for him as he transitions to his next chapter.”

Walsh also ran the New York Knicks from 2008 until 2011.

Pacers Hire Ted Wu As VP Of Basketball Operations

Dec 23, 2020 8:10 AM

The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday the hiring of Ted Wu as Vice President of Basketball Operations.

Wu joins the Pacers after working eight years with the NBA league office in New York City. In his role at the NBA, Wu was a member of the Salary Cap Management team where he oversaw player transactions and the administration of the league's player contract system. His understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreement allowed him to advise all 30 teams on strategy related to contract signings, trades, and the salary cap and tax system.

He was also a key contributor in the negotiation of the 2017 CBA with the National Basketball Players Association. In addition to his primary functions, Wu also supported the league's Basketball Operations department at events such as the NBA All-Star Game and Draft Combine and he also assisted the Finance Department in administering the league's escrow system and completion of each season’s year-end audit.

Victor Oladipo, Giannis Antetokounmpo Spent Time Together In Offseason

Dec 16, 2020 12:03 AM

Giannis Antetokounmpo spent time abroad with Victor Oladipo this past offseason as they worked out and also socialized, sources tell The Athletic.

That friendship is one of the major reasons why the Bucks pursued a trade for him and made an offer to the Indiana Pacers, sources say.

Oladipo's future with the Pacers is uncertain as he enters the final season of his existing contract.

Antetokounmpo has typically kept a distance from other star players and notably depicted a summer workout in 2018 that included LeBron James, James Harden and Kevin Durant.

Sources tell ESPN that the Bucks and Pacers never came close to a deal that would have worked for either side.

Malcolm Brogdon Wins 19-20 Citizenship Award

Dec 3, 2020 1:13 PM

Malcolm Brogdon has won the 2019-20 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, as administered and selected by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA).

Named after the NBA’s second commissioner, the honor is presented annually by the PBWA to a player, coach or athletic trainer who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.

Brogdon was one of five finalists for the 2019-20 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, along with Milwaukee Bucks guard Jrue Holiday (who played for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2019-20), Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Josh Okogie and Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce.

The finalists were chosen by a committee of PBWA members from nominees submitted by NBA teams. The winner was determined by a vote of the entire PBWA, which is composed of more than 200 writers and editors who cover the NBA regularly for newspapers, magazines and online news outlets.

“The depth and breadth of Malcolm Brogdon’s commitment to making a positive difference is inspiring,” said PBWA President Josh Robbins of The Athletic. “Members of the Professional Basketball Writers Association salute him and commend his fellow finalists and nominees for their exemplary work.”

A four-year NBA veteran, Brogdon is being honored for his commitment to education, gender and health equality as well as his support for criminal justice and voting reform. In July, he launched the Brogdon Family Foundation with a focus on two major initiatives, Hoops4Humanity and the JHA Education Project.

Victor Oladipo Denies Wanting Trade From Pacers

Dec 1, 2020 5:46 PM

Victor Oladipo is entering the final season of his four-year, $84 million contract extension signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016, which puts his future with the Indiana Pacers in doubt.

"Growing up, I was always taught not to engage in nonsense," Oladipo said. "I never have. I never came out and said that I didn't want to play for the Pacers or be in this organization, but, yeah, I'm focused on now. Here and now."

Oladipo is trying to focus on what he can control on the floor.

"It's very difficult, especially when things are said about you that's negative," Oladipo said. "I've been in the league for eight years now, this is my eighth year, and this is the first time anyone has accused me of anything like this. It's very interesting to me, but at the end of the day, I can't let none of the stuff that I can't control make me lose focus of what really matters, and that's this team, my teammates, this organization and making sure I'm healthy."
