Rockets Asked 76ers For Ben Simmons, Tyrese Maxey, Three First Round Picks

Jan 19, 2021 10:45 AM

The Houston Rockets asked for Ben Simmons, Tyrese Maxey and three first round picks from the Philadelphia 76ers for James Harden, sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer.

The 76ers declined and the Rockets traded Harden to the Brooklyn Nets in a package that netted them four first round picks, three picks swaps, cap relief and Victor Oladipo.

If the 76ers eventually decide the Simmons' pairing with Joel Embiid is not maximizing their collective talents, they could attempt to trade for someone like Bradley Beal or Zach LaVine.

76ers 'Ultimate Purpose' In James Harden Trade Talks Was To 'Provide Rockets Leverage'

Jan 18, 2021 4:09 PM

Sources tell The Athletic that the Philadelphia 76ers "ultimate purpose in the [James Harden] negotiations was to provide the Rockets with the leverage needed to maximize the return wit the Nets."

The 76ers had real interest in trading for James Harden, but Brooklyn's willingness to increase their offer reached a point where Philadelphia could no longer compete.

Sources also tell The Athletic that the Boston Celtics were involved in the later stages of trade talks as well.

Daryl Morey joined Philadelphia from the Rockets this past offseason and has a long relationship with Rafael Stone. With the 76ers and Nets sharing a division, Philadelphia benefits long-term from Brooklyn sending out the trade package they did for Harden.

Ben Simmons Happy To Still With 76ers Following End Of James Harden Trade Possibility

Jan 15, 2021 1:06 PM

Ben Simmons had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in 34 minutes in his first game since the possibility of the Philadelphia 76ers trading him for James Harden came to an end.

"I mean, this a business," Simmons said when asked if he was happy the Harden trade rumors were behind him.

"Things like that happen. Only thing I can control is, you know, how I approach my workouts, the games and my day-to-day thing. So, you know, I'm just trying to be professional and to do the right thing and help my team get wins."

When asked Thursday if he felt a need to discuss what happened with Morey or anyone else in management, Simmons said he can only control what he can control.

"I come in here and work every day," Simmons said. "So my job is to get better and get wins -- all the other stuff I can't control. As I said before, all I can control is how I come in with my mindset, with practices and on the floor, and I had a great time tonight. I'm blessed. I get to play the game I love every day at the highest level in the world. ... There's far worse things going on the world, so, you know, I'm in a blessed position. If you told me I would never play the game again, that'd be a different story."

When asked if he was happy to still be in Philadelphia, Simmons added, "Of course."

76ers 'Just Fine' With Not Trading Ben Simmons For James Harden

Jan 14, 2021 11:23 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers held serious conversations with the Houston Rockets centered on a trade of Ben Simmons for James Harden, but ultimately decided not to complete a deal and let him go to the Brooklyn Nets.

"I think I can say this on your podcast," said Ramona Shelburne. "I think it will be okay. I'm not betraying a confidence. I think the 76ers are just fine. They're happy.

"Like, they were intrigued by this idea. Obviously, Daryl Morey knows how good James Harden is. I think they were really intrigued by the idea of what James Harden would do for Joel Embiid. We'll never know. We're never going to know what that would have been.

"But they really had been playing well with Joel and Ben Simmons. I talked to Joel Embiid just a couple days ago and he was really talking up Ben Simmons and how much they've gotten along this year. They really have connected this year. Now, we get to see what actually happens with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons."

76ers Offered Ben Simmons, Matisse Thybulle, Picks To Rockets For James Harden

Jan 13, 2021 9:01 PM

Daryl Morey and the Philadelphia 76ers made an offer to the Houston Rockets for James Harden that included Ben Simmons, Matisse Thybulle and some form of draft compensation.

While it had been widely believed that the Rockets sought a young franchise cornerstone in a trade for Harden with Simmons fitting the bill, Houston instead went with a package from the Brooklyn Nets that included four future first round picks and four pick swaps.

Harden had long preferred a trade to either the Nets or 76ers.
