Ben Simmons Wants Trade From 76ers, Doesn't Plan On Reporting To Camp

Aug 31, 2021 3:30 PM

Ben Simmons has informed the Philadelphia 76ers that he no longer wants to remain with the franchise and does not intend to report to training camp.

Simmons met with Josh Harris, Daryl Morey, Elton Brand and Doc Rivers last week in Los Angeles.

The 76ers have been attempting to trade Simmons for the second time since December and his trade value across the league has gone down.

Simmons has four seasons and $147 million remaining on his deal and he's prepared to accept the consequences of a fine for now reporting to camp.

While there are plenty of teams interested in trading for Simmons, the asking price sought by the 76ers has been beyond what most would consider to be his fair market value.

“Think about three months ago when the Sixers are willing to give up Ben Simmons. You are like, ‘Let’s see what we have to do to get him,’” said a Western Conference executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “Now, the difference is Ben Simmons says he refuses to play for the Sixers. He wants to go to three California teams. There’s so much bad blood between him and the team.”

The executive said teams are not willing to give in to the Sixers’ steep asking price knowing they have to move Simmons.

“The kid said he’s not going back,” the executive said. “I’m not giving you what you’re demanding. They really messed this up.”

Charles Bassey Likely To Sign Non-Guaranteed Tender With 76ers

Aug 30, 2021 9:25 PM

Charles Bassey plans to sign the one-year, non-guaranteed tender with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bassey and the 76ers have been unable to come to terms on a rookie deal. The 76ers selected Bassey with the No. 53 pick in the draft.

Few second round picks sign the tender but it is a "bet on yourself" type of move with upside.

76ers Remain In Holding Pattern On Ben Simmons Trade

Aug 30, 2021 10:53 AM

A trade of Ben Simmons by the Philadelphia 76ers remains an apparent inevitability, but no deal is imminent.

The 76ers conducted expansive discussions with several teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors, but neither package was found appealing enough for an agreement to be reached.

The 76ers have told teams they are comfortable bringing back Simmons for the 21-22 season, but rival executives believe it is a matter of when and not if he is traded.

The Timberwolves have been motivated to find a deal for Simmons but would likely require a third team given their asset pool of Malik Beasley, Jaden McDaniels and D’Angelo Russell might not entice the 76ers.

The 76ers continue to seek Damian Lillard, but the Portland Trail Blazers want to build around him. The 76ers may be stuck between waiting out Lillard or trading Simmons now.

Haywood Highsmith Signs Exhibit 10 Deal With 76ers

Aug 24, 2021 3:13 PM

Haywood Highsmith has exercised his NBA out in his contract with Vanoli Cremona to sign an Exhibit 10 deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Highsmith signed with the Italian team last month.

Highsmith spent most of the first two seasons of his professional carer playing for the Delaware Blue Coats. Highsmith played in Germany last season.

The 76ers have 15 guaranteed contracts for the 21-22 season, which could put Highsmith on track to return to the G League.

De'Aaron Fox 'Content In Sacramento'

Aug 24, 2021 8:28 AM

De'Aaron Fox has been linked with a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons, but that would be a difficult decision for the Sacramento Kings to make.

The Kings have a logjam at guard with Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, Davion Mitchell and Buddy Hield while also having one of the worst defenses in the league. Trading for Simmons would balance Sacramento's roster construction and improve their defense.

But a league source tells The Ringer that Fox is "content in Sacramento" and that might be too critical of a component to risk for one of the more enigmatic players in the league in Simmons.

Fox signed a five-year, $163 million contract extension with the Kings during the 2020 offseason.

76ers Sign Grant Riller To Two-Way Contract

Aug 18, 2021 12:17 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to sign guard Grant Riller to a Two-Way contract. Riller played on a Two-Way contract for the Charlotte Hornets during the 2020-21 season.

Riller averaged 2.6 points per game in seven games played for Charlotte as a rookie. As a four-year starter at Charleston, Riller was an accomplished scorer and playmaker.

In order to make room for Riller, the Sixers waived guard Rayjon Tucker from his Two-Way contract.

76ers Expected To Keep Ben Simmons Through Camp Unless Damian Lillard Becomes Available

Aug 18, 2021 8:08 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are widely expected to keep Ben Simmons when training camp opens on September 28th unless the Portland Trail Blazers make Damian Lillard available in a trade package.

The 76ers have sought a "James Harden-like" package for Simmons so far in trade talks with other teams. Philadelphia would theoretically like to flip that package to the Blazers for Lillard should a trade materialize that meets those standards.

The 76ers signed Joel Embiid to a four-year, $196 million extension on Tuesday and are clearly trying to maximize his title window.

A trade of Simmons is widely considered an inevitability but the 76ers are not prepared to rush a deal. Simmons expects to be traded and has not personally been in close contact with Daryl Morey, Embiid or Doc Rivers this offseason.

Simmons' camp has canvassed the league gauging their interest in creating a new home for him.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs have been the teams most consistently linked with Simmons.

Joel Embiid, 76ers Agree To Four-Year, $196M Extension

Aug 18, 2021 8:08 AM

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a four-year, $196 million supermax extension. The deal will be fully guaranteed and contains a player option for the 26-27 season. Embiid's extension will begin in 23-24 and is based off a projected $124.95 million salary cap for that season.

Embiid represented himself in negotations with the 76ers.

When Embiid signed a five-year, $147.7 million extension in 2017, the deal had protections in case of catastrophic injury to his lower back or feet.

Embiid finished second in MVP voting last season.
