The Washington Wizards are on the verge of signing John Lucas III, according to sources.
Lucas would give the Wizards veteran depth in the backcourt after losing Bradley Beal to a wrist injury that will keep him out at least six weeks.
Lucas was traded twice this offseason, first going from the Utah Jazz to the Cleveland Cavaliers and then to the Boston Celtics. Lucas was waived by the Celtics shortly after the trade.

Daniel Orton has reached agreement with Shanxi of China on a $1 million-plus deal, a source tells RealGM.
Orton was released on Thursday by the Washington Wizards.
Orton played parts of last season with the Philadelphia 76ers and Maine Red Claws of the D-League.

The Wizards' roster stands at 17.
The Washington Wizards have exercised the fourth-year contract option on Bradley Beal and the third-year contract option on Otto Porter.
"Bradley and Otto are both big pieces of the core group of players that we will build around as we continue to improve our team," Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. "We look forward to them playing significant roles in our success both now and in the future."
Bradley Beal underwent an MRI exam on Saturday that revealed a non-displaced fracture of the scaphoid bone in his left (non-shooting) wrist that will require surgery, the Washington Wizards announced.
Kris Humphries underwent successful surgery Thursday to repair nerve damage in his right small finger.
Humphries lacerated his hand on the rim, between his fourth and fifth phalanxes (small and ring finger), in the second quarter of the Washington Wizards' preseason game at Chicago on 10/6.
DeJuan Blair, Nene, Daniel Orton and Xavier Silas of the Washington Wizards have each been suspended for one game for leaving their team's bench area in Monday's preseason game against the Chicago Bulls.
The players left the bench during an altercation between Joakim Noah and Paul Pierce.
The NBA said the suspensions will be served by the players during the first regular-season game in which the players are physically able to play.
