Steve Kerr: Basketball Players Who Grew Up Playing Soccer 'Are Better Passers'

Nov 23, 2019 3:31 AM

Steve Kerr said that he would make American youth basketball players play soccer to help them understand how to pass and move within a team setting.

Kerr added that too many players today emphasize beating defenders one-on-one.

“If I was the czar of American basketball I would make every player coming through the youth basketball program play football ... It translates directly (to hoops). The problem in basketball today the young players are coming up and they just try to beat everyone one-on-one with the dribble. They’re unbelievably gifted dribbling the ball but they don’t understand how to pass and to move. Which is what football would teach them," said Kerr on a recent episode of the Men in Blazers soccer podcast.

Kerr then pointed to Toni Kukoc as an example, saying that his understanding of passing and creating angles was influenced by soccer.

"Players who played soccer growing up, they’re better passers. Steve Nash. Unbelievable passer. Toni Kukoc was a beautiful passer ... And there’s no question in my mind that he was influenced by football. (Kids) understand the concept of triangles. They understand the concept of passing the ball, and cutting behind the man defending. That’s what football is. Find the angles, creating opportunities, creating scoring chances.”

Looney played 11 minutes in the season opener against the L.A. Clippers but left the game at halftime after aggravating his hamstring.

D'Angelo Russell On Choosing Warriors Over Timberwolves: 'The Weather Is Way Better'

Nov 19, 2019 2:11 AM

D’Angelo Russell said that the California weather played a role in his decision to choose to sign with the Golden State Warriors over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“I thought the opportunity here was amazing … It was definitely something I was considering very strongly. But then when this opportunity came, the weather is way better, so that helped me ... I did my first winter in New York and that was tough. So to get the opportunity to go somewhere where it’s warm again, I think that played a major part in my plan," admitted Russell.

Russell then added that his close friend Karl-Anthony Towns has to actively take a leadership role on the Wolves.

“He has to lead vocally on and off the court. Kind of attack that leadership role versus kind of coasting through. He’s got a taste of the playoffs and it’s something he really wants to do and continue to do with the core group of guys they have here."

Steph Curry said he "definitely" expects to return at some point this season for the Golden State Warriors.

Curry, who broke his hand on October 30th, underwent surgery on November 1st.

"I definitely expect to be ready to play. I don't know when. At some point in early spring. Just a matter of the rehab process. I've never obviously broken anything and dealt with a hand injury like this. ... [But] I'm excited about the potential that the rest of the season isn't lost," said Curry.

Curry added that he's using the time off to work on his body.

"Kind of treating it like a mini-offseason where you have three months to work on your body. Obviously, get some rest, but build a new foundation for what type of player I want to be coming back from this injury, and hopefully not missing a beat in terms of my rhythm."
