Tom Izzo To Return To Michigan State Next Season Despite Reported NBA Interest

Apr 30, 2014 2:08 PM

Tom izzo said he will return to coach Michigan State despite reportedly being a candidate for the coach openings of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons.

"First of all, I'm going to be at Michigan State,'' Izzo said Wednesday. "I still listen to things every day in our town about Nick Saban saying I'm not going to be the Alabama coach [when Saban was coach of the Miami Dolphins].

"Nobody knows where any of us are going to be. You have to look at your track record and, over all these years, is this what he's done?"

The Spartans lost in the Elite Eight last season to Connecticut.

"If somebody made me an offer to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers that was so good that it would impress everybody, does that mean I would never say never?" Izzo said. "I'm not doing that anymore. I've seen too many people get stung that way.

"Put it this way: I've got a big-time recruit coming in an hour and if I was leaving I wouldn't be recruiting.''

Armor To Relocate To Grand Rapids In Hybrid Deal With Pistons

Apr 10, 2014 11:37 AM

The Detroit Pistons will launch a D-League team in Grand Rapids with the Springfield Armor relocating.

Dennis Mannion, president of the Detroit Pistons, and Dan Reed, president of the NBA D-League, will be on hand to explain a “hybrid partnership with Detroit Pistons,” according to a press release sent out Thursday, April 10.

The team was purchased by an undisclosed local ownership group, and has received league approval, sources said.

“Hybrid” partnership, one of two ownership options followed by the NBA D-League, allows local ownership to control day-to-day and business operations while the parent club controls basketball operations. The other is exclusive ownership by the parent NBA club.

Sources: Joe Dumars Plans To Resign As Pistons' President As Soon As This Week

Apr 8, 2014 9:45 AM

Joe Dumars plans to resign as president of the Detroit Pistons, possibly as soon as this week, according to sources.

The Pistons had expected to make the playoffs after signing Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings last offseason. Detroit instead is 28-49 and out of playoff contention.

Dumars took over in 2000, one year after retiring as a player, and immediately began making changes, culminating in an NBA title in 2004 and a return trip to the Finals the next season.

Dumars tried to save Maurice Cheeks' job earlier this season, but Tom Gores insisted on a chance.

"I don't know," Jerebko said. "Eight more games. Eight more games.

"Everything is going to play a part of my decision but I'm not thinking about that right now. We'll see what happens this summer. It's not been a good year. We'll see what happens."

Jerebko, 27, is due to make $4.5 million next season but said he will not factor that into a decision.

"I don't play the game for money," Jerebko said. "We'll see what happens when I have a discussion with my agent. Like I said, eight more games to finish the season out then I'll start thinking about the future."

Pistons To Give More Time To Young Players

Apr 1, 2014 12:56 PM

John Loyer suggested the playing rotation could change some in April as official playoff elimination draws near for the Detroit Pistons.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jonas Jerebko have regained their status in the rotation, while some of the younger players, such as rookies Peyton Siva and Tony Mitchell, and Italian sharpshooter Gigi Datome, await their chances.
"You'll see different guys throughout the lineup, which you kind of have," Loyer said.  "But no drastic changes at this point."
